Conferences and summits: Cancer survivorship: advancing the right to be forgotten
Bruxelles
Thanks to advances in early cancer detection, effective therapies and supportive care, the prognosis for a cancer diagnosis is better than ever before. Survival rates have increased markedly over the last 20 years, resulting in more than 12 million persons with a history of cancer in Europe alone. Yet, for some obstacles persist when accessing financial services, even years after the end of their treatment. As part of Europe's Beating Cancer Plan, the Commission is closely examining practices in the area of financial services from the point of view of fostering access for persons with a history of cancer in long term remission. This meeting aims to take stock of progress so far and to continue the dialogue towards ensuring that only necessary and proportionate information is used when assessing the eligibility of applicants for financial products. Conferences and summits: InfoPoint conference: Promoting public and private sector dialogue for digital financial inclusion
Bruxelles
What happens when diverse stakeholders from the DFS ecosystem unite with a shared vision? The remarkable journeys of the Digital Financial Services Working Groups in Malawi and Ethiopia offer a compelling answer. Supported by UNCDF, the European Union (EU), and the Organization of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS), under the DFS4Resilience programme, these groups transitioned into full-fledged associations, setting a new benchmark for collaboration in the digital financial services sector. Ethiopia and Malawi's DFS Associations have ambitious plans. Their commitment to financial inclusion remains strong as they embrace their new identities. Now as established associations, they face the crucial challenge of sustainability. This session will delve into their plans to become independent, leveraging insights from successful global models to secure long-term financial stability and move beyond their initial reliance on donor support. It will also explore the valuable lessons learned and best practices they hope to leverage to promote financial inclusion for all, with a particular focus on women and marginalized groups. Their journey offers valuable insights into the power of collaboration in driving innovation and financial inclusion, emphasizing the associations' desire to use their experience and best practices to impact national strategies. Conferences and summits: Supporting companies in applying the European Sustainability Reporting Standards
Bruxelles
The event will bring together experts and practitioners from Member State representations, business and trade associations, companies, consultancies, auditors and other stakeholders. Its goal is to showcase ongoing initiatives and discuss ideas for further mechanisms to support companies that apply the new reporting standards. The ESRS started to apply to the first companies in scope of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) as of financial year 2024. Effective and well-targeted support initiatives can help to reduce costs and burden for companies. Such initiatives can be developed at European, national and even regional and local levels. In addition to helping companies under the scope of the CSRD, support initiatives might also benefit SMEs who are not facing legal reporting requirements but who nevertheless face an increase in demand for sustainability information as a result of the so-called "trickle-down effect". Conferences and summits: InfoPoint conference: Fostering change - tax-motivated illicit financial flows
Bruxelles
Illicit Financial Flows (IFFs) involve illegal or illicit financial transfers across borders, such as money laundering, tax abuse, and terrorist financing. Such flows lead to revenue losses, weaken democratic institutions, decrease private investments, and escalate inequalities. The scale of these flows siphons off substantial annual tax revenues that are urgently needed to increase fiscal space and meet the 2030 Agenda. The Study on tax-motivated illicit financial flows acknowledges that a sizable portion of IFFs is driven by tax-related motives, often involving sophisticated schemes that exploit legal loopholes in the international tax system. Given the lack of a universally accepted definition for IFFs, the study proposes a developmental approach that includes both illegal (tax evasion) and illicit activities (tax avoidance). It underlines the challenges in measuring IFFs and their direct impact in devising effective and timely policy responses and the need for improved governance and transparency to prevent revenue losses. Taking stock of global efforts by various stakeholders -- including the European Commission, African Union, African and international organizations -- to foster standards, build capacities, and promote cooperation in the fight against these flows, the study concludes with specific recommendations. They emphasise strategic intermediation, strengthening partnerships, and innovative capacity building to support African nations in addressing (tax-related) IFFs.This Info Point is designed to gather experts in the field to offer their insights on current obstacles and potential solutions, while considering the report's suggested actions. The discussion will broadly cover the topic of Illicit Financial Flows (IFFs), delving into both policy and operational strategies to curb tax-related IFFs, and will explore future directions to accelerate progress. Training and workshops: Impact of Climate Change on Security Practitioners
Climate change is high on both national and European political agendas as all countries need to address the environmental challenges. With this workshop, we aim to focus some of this attention on immediate and future, but inevitable, impact of climate change on international and domestic security affairs and related policy implications. Climate change no longer is considered solely as an environmental issue thus its implications are considered in a variety of contexts stemming from social, through cultural, agricultural, industrial to economic. The documented effects of climate change like global average temperature increase, rise in sea levels, and altered weather patterns generate security consequences, presenting new challenges to societies like intercommunal tensions, changes in rates and types of crime, new legislations and questioning the methods and technology the policing should be performed by. Our ambition is to identify the most pressing trends and threats, and to propose actions that the research community can undertake to support the adaptation process. Exhibitions: NaturArchy exhibition
Bruxelles
'Resonances' is the name of the JRC SciArt flagship initiative, which fosters collaborations between artists, scientists and policymakers. Its fourth edition (2022-2024) revolves around NaturArchy, which aims to reimagine our relationship with nature and the environment. The NaturArchy exhibition will open its doors on 24 May at iMAL, Art Center for Digital Cultures & Technology (Brussels) with a vernissage. It will be open for visits Wednesday to Friday from 10.00 to 18.00 (CEST) and Saturday to Sunday from 11.00 to 19.00 (CEST).It is produced by the JRC SciArt project in partnership with iMAL, and supported by the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. This is done through artistic, scientific and legal expressions: intersecting science and law, reason and style, art and judgment, policy and imagination. After two years of deep inquiry, research and co-creation, which began with a summer school at the JRC in 2022 and continued with artistic residencies in 2023, these art and science works provocatively call to be contrasted with pieces of natural and cultural heritage. From global oceans to water flows, from contamination and bacteria to climate tipping points, pollinators, and landscapes of natural hazards; from natural and artificial intelligence to non-human values, forests, lands, soils, composting; from grief and mourning to rituals, wonder and collective action. This is the creation of 15 artists, working together with JRC researchers and the SciArt team, also involving EC policymakers with a keen interest in the topic. The result: nearly 50 people currently joining forces for NaturArchy.
