The 2016 CEF Synergy Call makes 40 million of euros available to projects supporting the deployment of sustainable and efficient transport and energy infrastructure.

Connecting Europe Facility

The Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) is a key EU funding instrument to promote growth, jobs and competitiveness through targeted infrastructure investment at European level. It supports the development of high performing, sustainable and efficiently interconnected trans-European networks in the fields of transport, energy and digital services.

Under the CEF, €22.4 billion will be made available from the EU’s 2014-2020 budget to co-fund transport projects in the EU Member States whilst €4.7 billion will support projects in the energy sector. The funding is implemented in the form of grants, managed by INEA, and through financial instruments.

CEF Synergy Call

CEF Synergy calls for proposal will support synergies in areas such as smart energy grids, electric mobility, intelligent and sustainable transport systems, joint rights of way of infrastructure coupling. Actions selected under this call will support the deployment of sustainable and efficient transport and energy infrastructure by contributing to achieving the following specific objectives:

Transport sector

• Ensuring sustainable and efficient transport systems by supporting a transition to innovative low-carbon and energy-efficient transport technologies and systems, while optimising safety.

Energy sector

• Increasing competitiveness by promoting the further integration of the internal energy market and the interoperability of electricity and gas networks across borders. 
• Supporting projects promoting the interconnection of networks in the Member states and removing internal constraints; 
• Decreasing energy isolation; 
• Increasing the interconnectivity in electricity and achieving price convergence between the energy markets.

Support will be granted on a competitive basis in the form of EU co-financing (60% of eligible costs), following a thorough evaluation and selection process. Applicants have until 13 December 2016 to submit their proposals. The outcome of the calls will be published by April 2017.
