165 mln euros on a new Research Fund for Coal and Steel calls
The Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS) is an EU funding programme that supports research and demonstration projects in the coal and steel sectors. This year, the RFCS has allocated 165 million euros to two new calls: the Big Tickets Call for Steel and the Big Tickets Call for Coal. The Call for Steel has a budget of 130 million euros and covers pilots and demonstrators for breakthroughs in clean steel making technologies related to the objectives of the RFCS Research Programme (Council Decision (EU) 2021/1094). These objectives include CO2 neutral iron ore reduction, reducing the specific energy required to produce steel, circular economy and sector coupling solutions to meet the zero-waste goal for steelmaking, preparation of steel CO/CO2 gases for Carbon Capture Use and Storage (CCUS), and Process Integration (PI) in steel plants to reduce the use of fossil carbon and associated CO2 emissions. The Call for Coal has a budget of 34.5 million euros and includes pilots and demonstrators for “Supporting the just transition of the coal sector and regions”, “Improving health and safety”, and “Minimising the environmental impacts of coal mines in transition”. Specific objectives for this call include mine water monitoring, management and/or treatment in coal mines, land monitoring, modelling, stabilisation and/or restoration, waste and/or spoil treatment of mines in transition, energy recovery associated with the mitigation and monitoring of methane emissions from coal mines, materials recycling and development of alternative materials, and repurposing of former coal and lignite mines. The scope of the proposals should be in line with Council Decision (EU) 2021/1094 and should address 1 or 2 of the objectives for each call. Proposals must be submitted before 04 May 2023, 17:00 CET. The RFCS programme is contributing to the Clean Steel Partnership recently launched in Horizon Europe, and will help the transformation of the European steel industry towards the green, digital and circular economy. It will also contribute to the just transition of the coal sector during the phase out of coal, including activities addressing reskilling, upskilling and training for workers.
Two new Big Tickets calls open as part of the Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS) programme until 4 May 2023. A budget of 165 mln euros has been allocated on proposals concerning European Green Deal and Just Transition in order to boost large projects at high technology readiness levels.
